Yukawa Onsen

This humdrum inn, whose name amusingly means "Pavilion of the Dragon King," gets my vote mainly for its location. Situated on one of the loveliest back roads I've traversed in japan, it could be a convenient stop for travelers on the way up the Noto Peninsula. Ryuokaku mainly serves a clientele of local farmers. All the better for authenticity. And the baths, while utilitarian, offer up unusually hard, red-brown, iron-scented water. My Canadian companion thought this and the heavenly surroundings alone qualified Ryuokaku for an entry in this guide. While his points are well-taken, I wouldn't necessarily recommend staying here. But for a taste of irrepressibly unspoiled Noto, you can't do better for a drop-in.
